'Bozeat halved'

Great comment last night from a good friend and my ex-tennis coach Chris Vernon (now a teacher) who I haven't seen for too many months. He turned up last night for men's team tennis doubles practice at www.acltc.co.uk with his brother Andy Vernon.

Light heartedly I quipped 'look, it's Vernon squared' Chris looked at me with an admiring glance at my sveltish appearnace and replied 'look, it's Bozeat halved' Funny!

I subsequently related this exchange to Chin on Skype - his response 'Bozeat quartered more like'.
He never thinks I work out hard enough.

Apparently after 3 months training I now hold the world speed cycling record!

Apparently and certainly very suprisingly I am now the fastest ever time trial cyclist on earth. Tonight I completed my first timed 20k cycle ride - Home to Alrewas (on the A38). According to Endomondo (an app. on my Blackberry that records distances and speeds using GPS tracking) I travelled 12.66 miles in 21mins. This is faster than Chris Boardman who recorded an average speed of 51kph in the fastest ever stage of the Tour de France in 1994 over 7k.

According to Endomondo I averaged 57.3 kp/h over 21k. Has anyone got Chris's phone number so I can let him know and while I am at it I should call the Guiness Book of Records. Or maybe GPS satellites have a similar indifferent attitude towards Staffordshire as Jeremy Clarkson.

P.S. Sadly the actual time according to the watch was 49 minutes but don't tell anyone.

Can you help me share my story?

The experience of bringing these clubs to life has been immense. One of the fastest learning curves I have had to ascend in recent years especially in the current business climate. However I can now make a guarantee to any member or guest of the clubs that gives me a compelling enough reason to do so.

If they would like to meet and talk business with anyone local I can find a way to make it happen. Now that is a bold statement but one I can now stand behind having proved it several times in the past 12 months.

I know that in these challenging times there are more and more people who are looking towards networking and the formation of collaborative business partnerships to get the doors open to the people they want to meet and do business with.

I suspect they would welcome some tips on how this can be achieved with a little hard word work, patience, some commmon sense and the adoption of proven door opening approaches.

Could you put me in touch with them?

Who do you know that would be interested in visiting and/or speaking at a Bozeat Business club meeting?

As the business community continues to grow we are receiving enquiries increasingly from further afield. Could you help us by introducing us to people you think would like to connect with the members and visitors. We are always looking to learn from, be inspired by and do business with impressive people.

Who do you know that we could invite?

What type of executive club with a WOW! factor could we create that would compel CEOs/senior executives of local institutions to join?

As I have had the pleasure and priviledge of acting as 'Parky' to so many impressive speakers in the past year I have often wondered if we could create an exclusive executive level club for CEOs/senior decision makers in the region who fit into the movers and shakers / great and good category. This exclusive club might be less of a marketing vehicle and more of a problem solving/door opening community with members and guest speakers talking about the issues that concern corporate business leaders. These are some that have been mentioned:

Managing the supply chain
Dealing with difficult and uncompromising customers - (did someone mention Tescos?)
Inspiration, leading change, employee engagement and performance management
Strategy development and deployment
Assessing risk
New investment and franchising opportunites
Financial management in turbulent times
Working overseas

I'd like to take the best of what other organisations do to create something that would attract the senior decision makers.

Meetings would be much less frequent - say 4 to 6 times a year and the WOW! factor would be vital. Connecting with, listening to and learning from exceptional people, exclusivity and making every event truly memorable would be the order of the day.

The question is what would we have to create that would compel you or someone like you to want to become a member?

Should we set a different category or categories of membership for the larger employers in the region?

On many occaisions people have asked me (Simon) if I could introduce another level of membership. Currently there is just one - Full members which entitles members to attend all the twice monthly meetings and to invoke, at their choice, an exclusivity clause that precludes any competitors from joining the club. The majority choose this option although some are relaxed having competitors present.

Currently anyone can visit the club as long as the meeting is open (closed meetings are for members only) and they have placed a courtesy call to a member who might be a competitor.

The challenge is that we would like to attract employees of local organisations who might attend the club less regularly but still take advantage of the community. An example is 3M Healthcare - they are less likely to want to use the club as a marketing vehicle but it might support their corporate and social responsibility / PR agenda and they may find services represented in the club which help them make/save money.

We are aware that speakers in the past have commented that they feel a little like a honey pot attracting the members and guests who swarm around them armed with their business cards! We have made every effort to prevent this happening and approach the practice of forging new business relationships through networking in an assured and professional manner in keeping with the atmosphere we have carefully cultivated in the clubs.

Also we have had visitors from major institutions e.g. Leicester Tigers and De Montford University who would welcome the opportunity of joining the club but would never be able to make all the meetings due to the distance they would have to travel.

What do you think we could offer, say an affiliate membership, that would make the business club offering compelling enough for someone in your organisation (or similar to your own) to want to join?
